How to Make Your Own Scented Tea Light Candles?
Tea light candles are small, round candles that come in metal or plastic cups. They are popular for creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere in any room. They can also be used for aromatherapy, decoration, or as a source of heat for warming dishes or pots.
But did you know that you can make your own scented tea light candles at home? It’s easy, fun, and inexpensive. You can customize your tea light candles with your favorite scents, colors, and shapes. You can also use natural and eco-friendly ingredients, such as soy wax and essential oils.
In this blog post, we will show you how to make your own scented tea light candles in a few simple steps.
What You Need
To make your own scented tea light candles, you will need the following materials:
- Tea light cups: You can use metal or plastic cups, or you can reuse old tea light cups that have been cleaned and emptied.
- Wax: You can use soy wax or paraffin wax, depending on your preference and availability. Soy wax is more natural and eco-friendly, while paraffin wax is more affordable and easy to find.
- Wick: You can buy pre-waxed wicks with metal tabs, or you can make your own wicks by dipping cotton string in melted wax and letting it dry.
- Fragrance: You can use essential oils, fragrance oils, or dried herbs and flowers to add scent to your tea light candles. Essential oils are more natural and therapeutic, while fragrance oils are more varied and potent.
- Color: You can use candle dye, food coloring, crayons, or mica powder to add color to your tea light candles. Candle dye and food coloring are more liquid and easy to mix, while crayons and mica powder are more solid and vibrant.
- Double boiler: You can use a double boiler or a makeshift one by placing a heat-safe bowl over a pot of boiling water. This is where you will melt your wax.
- Thermometer: You can use a candy thermometer or a digital thermometer to measure the temperature of your wax. This is important to ensure the proper melting and setting of your wax.
- Spoon: You can use a metal spoon or a wooden spoon to stir your wax and mix in your fragrance and color.
- Pipette or dropper: You can use a pipette or a dropper to transfer your melted wax into your tea light cups. This is more precise and less messy than pouring directly from the bowl.
- Toothpick or skewer: You can use a toothpick or a skewer to adjust the position of your wick and remove any air bubbles from your wax.
What You Do
To make your own scented tea light candles, you will need to follow these steps:
- Prepare your tea light cups by placing them on a flat surface and inserting a wick in each one. Make sure the wick is centered and straight, and the metal tab is touching the bottom of the cup. You can use a dab of glue or wax to secure the wick if needed.
- Prepare your double boiler by filling the pot with water and bringing it to a boil. Then place the bowl on top of the pot and add your wax. Use about 1 ounce of wax per tea light candle.
- Melt your wax over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally with a spoon. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of your wax. For soy wax, the ideal temperature is between 160°F to 180°F. For paraffin wax, the ideal temperature is between 170°F to 190°F.
- Add your fragrance and color to your melted wax, stirring well with a spoon. For fragrance, use about 10 drops of essential oil or 1 teaspoon of fragrance oil per ounce of wax. For color, use about 1 drop of candle dye or food coloring, a small piece of crayon, or a pinch of mica powder per ounce of wax. Adjust the amount according to your desired intensity.
- Transfer your melted wax into your tea light cups using a pipette or a dropper. Fill each cup about 3/4 full, leaving some space for the wax to expand as it cools.
- Adjust the position of your wick using a toothpick or a skewer if needed. Make sure the wick is centered and straight, and not touching the sides of the cup.
- Remove any air bubbles from your wax using a toothpick or a skewer if needed. Air bubbles can cause uneven burning and cracking of your tea light candles.
- Let your tea light candles cool completely before trimming the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax surface. This will prevent smoking and sooting of your tea light candles.
- Enjoy your homemade scented tea light candles!
